VT-8 was a US Navy squadron of TBD Devastor torpedo bombers. Operating from USS Hornet, it took part in the Battle of Midway. Led by Lieutenant Commander John C. Waldron, the squadron attacked Japanese carriers on 4 June, 1942. The 15 obsolete TBD Devastators were all shot down by Japanese Zeros. The only surviving crewman was Ensign George H. Gay, who ditched his aircraft and was rescued by a PBY after spending 30 hours in the water.
