The Focke Wulf Fw 187 lost the competition for the Zerstorer fighter of the Luftwaffe. The winner was the Messerschmitt Bf 110, which went to equip all German Zerstorer and Nacht Gruppen.

The Fw 187 only saw limited service with the Focke Wulf's Industry Defense Squadron (Industrie Schutzstaffel) in Bremen. Three A-0 aircraft were sent to Norway for operational evaluation. The pilots reported the Fw 187 as superior to the Bf 110: when the RLM knew about it, the Falkes were immediately withdrew. Many sources claim that there were political involvements in the decision, as Willy Messerchmitt had many influencial bounds and friendships in the Nazi establishment.

German propaganda published many pictures of the Fw 187 as "new fighter entering service". The truth was, however,  different, as only 9 aicraft were built.
